Paid media

Google Ads or Meta ads? How to choose your first paid channel.

A practical way for local and growing businesses to choose between Google Ads and Meta ads, set up measurement, and judge the results that matter.

Start with how your customers buy

Google Ads and Meta ads are both powerful, but they do different jobs. Google search ads reach people who are already looking for a service. Meta ads on Facebook and Instagram reach people who fit a customer profile but may not be searching yet.

So the first question isn't which platform is better. It's how your customers usually find a business like yours. If people search when they need you, search is a natural starting point. If what you sell is visual, discretionary, or new to the buyer, social ads can introduce it.

When Google Ads usually comes first

Search ads work well for high-intent services where the buyer can describe what they want: an emergency dentist, laser hair removal near me, a payment processing quote. The searcher has already done half the work. Your job is to appear with a relevant message and a page that makes the next step easy.

Keep the first campaign tight. Target the services you most want to sell, set realistic location boundaries, and add negative keywords for searches you don't want to pay for. Send each ad group to the most relevant page, not the homepage.

When Meta ads usually comes first

Meta works well when the product is easy to show, the offer is time-sensitive, or demand needs to be created rather than captured. A new treatment, a seasonal promotion, or a product people don't know to search for are good examples.

On Meta, creative does much of the targeting. Plan several variations of the hook, visual, and offer so the platform can learn what resonates. Use retargeting to reach people who visited your website but didn't take action yet.

Set up measurement before you spend

Install the Google tag and the relevant platform tracking, then define conversion actions for the outcomes that matter: calls, form submissions, booking requests, and purchases. Decide what counts as a qualified lead before the first invoice arrives.

Platform dashboards report conversions in their own way. Compare them with what actually reaches your inbox, phone, or booking system. The number that matters most is the cost of a qualified lead, not the cost of a click.

Give the test a fair budget and timeline

A test needs enough budget and time to produce meaningful data. Changing targeting or creative every day makes it hard to learn anything. Agree on a test period, a budget, and the measure you'll use to judge it.

Once one channel works, add the other. Search captures demand, social builds it, and retargeting connects the two. A good paid media partner should explain the plan, show you the tracking, and report on leads in plain language.
